Vera Kathryn Troyer

Vera ‘Kathryn’ Troyer died March 23, 2013, peacefully, at Sunrise of Lenexa, Lenexa, Kansas. She was born in Zanesville, Ohio, August 31, 1927, the daughter of Norris and Vera Frye. The family moved to Hutchinson in 1932, where Kathryn attended school, and formed an interest in journalism. She loved writing articles, stories and skits for church, family and community publications.

After marrying Harold Paul Troyer on January 18, 1947, she resided in Yoder, Kansas, most of her life,  until moving in 2004, to Lenexa, Kansas, to be near her family. She retired from the Yoder Post Office and after Paul’s death in June, 1992, she worked for Heritage Tours.

Kathryn left a legacy of crocheted afghans which were given as wedding and baby gifts to many friends and family members. More importantly, she was an inspiration to everyone who knew her, especially during her illnesses in her later years. She was our beloved ‘Mother’, ‘Gram’ and ‘GiGi’ and will be missed by each of us. Kathryn is survived by her daughter, Marsha Oehlert, Shawnee, KS; son, Peter Troyer, Spokane, Washington; grandsons and spouses, Troy Oehlert, Trent and Molly Oehlert,  all of Shawnee, KS, Jacob and Jana Troyer, Spokane, Washington; great grandchildren, Jason, Benjamin and Samantha Oehlert, Shawnee, KS, Jaceylynn and Judah Troyer, Spokane, Washington; brothers Don  and Jim Frye of Hutchinson, KS. She was preceded in death by sisters  Vanieta Leddon, Betty Amrine, and Karen Starks and brothers Richard and Bobby Frye.

A private graveside service will be held Saturday, April 6, at Fairlawn Cemetery in Hutchinson, followed by a celebration of Kathryn’s life at Journey Mennonite Church, 808 S. Poplar, South Hutchinson, KS, at 11:00 a.m. for friends and family.

A Kansas City area Celebration of Life will be held April 11, 2013, at Four Colonies, 8201 Monrovia, Lenexa, KS, from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Memorial gifts may be made to American Heart Association or Gentiva Hospice, 8735 Rosehill Road, Suite 200, Lenexa, KS, 66215.

    Marsha, Pete and families,

I am sure I do not have to tell you how much your mom meant to SO many!! From the days when I was a young mom at So. Hutch Mennonite Church to the day when we started working together at Heritage Tours she was always a mentor, friend and christian witness. Let all the wonderful memories carry you through this difficult time!!!

    Tammy Mills
