Sandra Louise Thomas
Sandra Louise Thomas, 74, of Bonner Springs, Kansas passed away at home on Wednesday, February 28, 2017.
Sandra was born August 6, 1942 in Hugoton, KS, daughter of Charles and Onita (Youngren) Simmons. She attended Hugoton schools and graduated valedictorian from Hugoton High School, where she was awarded a Watkins scholarship to the University of Kansas. Sandra received a BA in Psychology and History and a Master’s degree in Art History, all from the University of Kansas. She was a homemaker while her two children, Chris and Emily, were growing up and then became a newspaper reporter for the Leavenworth Times and later, a reporter and columnist for 25 years with the Bonner Springs Chieftain newspaper. Sandra served on the Bonner Springs Public Library Board for 10 years during the time the new library was being designed and built.
Sandra is survived by her husband, Charles, daughter Emily (Robert) Dykes, Bonner Springs, son Christopher (Emily) of Portland, OR and four grandchildren whom she loved dearly, Paul and Charlotte Dykes and Owen and Lena Thomas. She is also survived by her sister, Ann (Robert) Brown, Lakewood, CO, her brother Roger (Deborah) Simmons, Myersville, MD and extended family members.
A memorial service will be held at 6 pm on Friday, March 31, 2017 at the Bonner Springs United Methodist Church. A celebration of Sandra’s life will be held following the service in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Bonner Springs Public Library in memory of Sandra.
