Robert Leo Bray

Robert Leo Bray, age 84, of Lenexa, KS, died peacefully at Kansas City Hospice House on October 1, 2021. Bob was born on June 5, 1937, in Manilla, IA to John and Dorothy (Goeser) Bray. After graduating from Creighton Law School in 1964, he became the Assistant County Attorney and began his career in private practice in the area. Bob began Legal Services of Iowa in Council Bluffs and later moved to Des Moines as their lobbyist. He was then litigation counsel for Allied Group Insurance.  Bob’s life was characterized by his service for those in need and he dedicated his professional life to advocacy for the underserved.

In the first class of Permanent Deacons of the Diocese of Des Moines in 1972, his ministry focused on social justice. He worked with the Campaign for Human Development, was on the Diocesan Marriage Tribunal, ministered to men in Iowa prisons, and with his wife, Kathleen, did marriage preparation with engaged couples. Upon retirement, he and Kathleen moved to Lenexa, KS to be near his family. While Bob was an avid fly fisherman and a passionate reader, his greatest joy was being happily married to Kathleen O’Neill for 63 years.

Robert is survived by his wife, Kathleen A. Bray; children, John Bray (Jennifer), Dr. Melissa Bray (Nicole), and Emilie Ashby (DeAngelo); grandchildren, Abigail Ashby, Caitlin Bray, Ebube Akabogu, Lauren Ashby, Amala Akabogu, and Aiden Bray; and sisters, Dorothy Eller, Mary Grimitt, and Geralyn Bray. He has joined his son, Tim, and brothers, Ed and Tom, in heaven.

The attendance at today’s Celebration of Life was a testimony to how many friends Bob had and how much he was appreciated. It was a wonderful tribute and memorial service.
I had the privilege of working with Bob during his last several years at Allied. He will be missed by many including me.

I knew and appreciated Bob during his years as litigation Counsel for Allied, a role in which he assigned me more than a few cases to defend, and taught me a lot. He was a gentleman and a pleasure to work with. His character showed even in the way he evaluated insurance claims. My condolences to Bob’s family and other friends.
