Refugia Adams Poertner
Refugia “Pula” Adams Poertner, nee Rios, 78, lifelong resident of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away November 18, 2013, at Highland Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
Refugia was born July 10, 1935, to Rosalio and Elvira (Cisneros) Rios. She graduated from Redemptorist High School. Refugia became a loving wife, homemaker and a young widowed mother of four. She became a postal worker and later a certified nursing assistant in home healthcare. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, music, bowling, embroidering and her Royals & Chiefs. Refugia’s innate kindness and caring endeared her to many.
She is predeceased by her parents; her husband, Howard Adams; her daughter, Lillian Adams; two sisters, Soledad Becerra, and Margaret Rodriguez; six brothers, Paul, Raymond, Frank, Russell, Robert, and Vincent Rios. She is survived by her sons, Brian, Michael, and John Adams; five sisters, Dolores Lopez, Theresa Mendoza, Mary Helen Williamson, Rosemary Miller, and Marie Rios; three brothers, Ralph, Joe, and Jesse Rios; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
The family expresses gratitude for the caring staffs at Highland, Midwest Cancer Care, and VITAS Hospice Care.
A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, December 6, in the chapel of Mt. Calvary Cemetery, 1150 N. 38th Street, Kansas City, Kansas. Interment Private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, at www.lustgarten.org
