Paul Otto Doering, age 88, died at Tallgrass Creek in Blue Sage Point in Overland Park, KS on Thursday, January 1, 2015.

Born July 1, 1926, to the Reverend Otto and Christine Doering, in Vandalia, Illinois, Paul served as an Evangelical Lutheran Church in America pastor for over 40 years serving congregations in Waco and Grand Prairie, Texas, Sedalia, Missouri; Tulsa, Oklahoma; Hillsboro, IL; and New Douglas, IL. His mission in serving congregations was two-fold: helping parishioners delve into scripture to understand the Bible and ensuring young people experienced summer camps. Paul attended both Carthage College and Muhlenberg College earning his bachelors. He is a divinity school graduate of Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago. Paul also served in the armed forces in the Merchant Marines from 1945 to 1949. Paul had a passion for gardening and was well known for his spring, summer and fall produce which he shared with all.

Survivors include his spouse of 60 years, Dorcas; his two sons, Eric and wife Jerri Modrall of Colorado and Thomas (Tad) and wife Mary of Texas, as well as two grandchildren, Sarah Doering of Austin, TX and Andrew Doering, currently studying in Sweden. He was preceded in death by his parents and his three brothers, Ralph, Edgar and John and his sister, Margaret Trower. His faith and value of extended family is reflected in his love for his many in-laws, nieces and nephews.

A memorial services will be held at 2pm on Saturday, January 10, at Atonement Lutheran Church at 9948 Metcalf Avenue in Overland Park. Interment will be held in private. Relatives and friends are welcome at the service and a reception at the church immediately following the service, from 3 to 4:30 pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are welcomed and should be mailed to Bethany College, 335 East Swensson Street, Lindsborg, KS 67456 thus reflecting his life-long commitment to church-related higher education.
