Patricia McClure Schmaus

Patricia Schmaus (1)

Early on August 21st Patricia McClure Schmaus, our brilliant mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away peacefully at the age of 88. Patty was born in Philadelphia, PA on October 23rd, 1929, the day of the infamous stock market crash, to John and Mae McClure. She attended KU, married John Wm Schmaus MD, and raised three children. When the marriage ended in divorce, Patty completed her education with a Master in English Literature from UMKC. She taught English Literature at KCAI, UMKC, and for many years at KCCC.

Patty was well loved by her students, colleagues, friends, and family. She was a wonderful gardener and lover of nature. She devoted time and energy to the Unitarian Universalist Church and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. She was known for her generosity, sense of humor, and intellect.

Patty is survived by her children, Karen Grotewohl, John Schmaus, and Mary Franzke, as well as 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. A celebration of her life will be held over the Winter holidays. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

She was the most gentle, caring,, fair (and intellectual) person l I have ever known. Takejng a strong position for what she felt to be right without shouting about it, helping gently and quietly those who needed support…
If it so happens that there is a heaven and a god, I’m sure that there was a fluffy cloud for her to nestle on and a cute puppy lick her finger.
She deserved only the best of what she liked that a heaven could offer.
