Vernon Vern
Rourke
Nov 16, 1941 — Apr 6, 2025
Vernon Leslie Rourke, affectionately known as Vern, left his pain behind on April 6, 2025, at the age of 83 in Kansas City, Missouri, after a valiant battle with cancer. Vern was a kind and intelligent man with a wry sense of humor. He lived a caring and honest life and left beauty in every space he inhabited. He was born November 16, 1941, in Langdon, North Dakota, to Joseph and Mildred Rourke, and grew up with his brothers, Orland and James. A proud US Army Veteran who served two terms, he also participated in the Patriot Guard Riders flag line honoring veterans. Vern worked in commercial printing and graphic arts for 40 years. Throughout his career, he was known for his hard work, integrity, and dedication to excellence.
Vern was a wise man of simple joys, profound kindness, and fierce determination. He loved nature, dogs, trees, birds, and some people. He was happiest in a flower garden, watching birds or walking on trails, where he found peace and fulfillment. His adventurous spirit led him to travel widely, always eager to experience new cultures and landscapes. Vern's generous heart was evident through his unwavering desire to help others, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him.
He treasured vacations with his wife, preferably around water. Together they explored the blue highways, Kansas state parks, and traveled to many states and countries. Every week, he made sure they took a day trip and found a great lunch and some interesting places to visit. Vern's friends will remember his unique sense of humor, his brilliant smile, harmless flirting, and his love of wide, open spaces.
Those left to embrace Vern's memory are his loving wife and partner of 50 years in all ways, Cindy Gillispie, his nephew Bracken Rourke (Rachel), and countless friends who will cherish and miss him dearly. Though it is hard to imagine a world without Vern, the warmth of his spirit remains in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
In honoring Vern's wishes, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, where family and friends will gather to share memories and celebrate the extraordinary life of a truly remarkable and kind man.
