Suzanne
Steffen
Oct 7, 1960 — Apr 1, 2025
Suzanne Louise Steffen was born on October 7, 1960, in Davis, California to Norman Louis Steffen and Kathryn Jo Pierce Steffen. Suzanne passed away peacefully on April 1, 2025, in Kansas City, Missouri.
Suzanne spent much of her childhood in Lawrence, KS where her father was a pastor at University Lutheran Church. She was a junior high cheerleader, high school tennis player, and card-carrying member of the popcorn girls - her devoted group of high school friends.
Her family moved to DeKalb, IL in 1977 where she graduated from Dekalb High School before returning to Lawrence, KS to pursue her degree in Architecture at the University of Kansas. It was during her time at KU that she was introduced to Bob Hyland who would soon become the love of her life.
Suzanne moved to Tulsa, OK in 1982 for an internship where she reconnected with and began dating Bob. The two moved to Kansas City, MO in 1983 and were married at Immanuel Lutheran Church in 1985. They purchased their first home together in 1986. In the first half of their marriage, Bob and Suzanne enjoyed sailing, camping, backpacking, and taking trips through Europe and Central America while renovating their beautiful Brookside Home.
Suzanne and Bob decided to begin the process of domestic adoption and in 1998, brought home their beautiful daughter Natalie. A few years later, in 2003, they adopted their precious son Liam.
Suzanne retired from her 20-year career in architecture after Liam's birth and dedicated her life to taking care of others.
Suzanne was active in her church community as a Sunday school teacher and member of the altar guild. She will be remembered for her dedication to the children she taught and for making the best communion bread.
As a stay-at-home mom, she spent countless hours fostering creativity in her children, supporting their many hobbies, and ensuring they were confident in their adoption stories. She was actively involved in their early education through volunteering in their classrooms, helping prep materials, and attending field trips.
She worked tirelessly supporting her two children as they matured, attending every school musical, tennis match, and answering every phone call. She was a devoted sister-in-law to Bob's disabled sister Melanie, managing appointments, organizing care, and offering support. Though their time was cut short by their illnesses, she and Bob continued to explore the outdoors together, taking camping trips in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Arkansas.
Suzanne is survived by her beloved husband, Robert Dean Hyland, two wonderful children Natalie Kay Hyland and Liam Emory Hyland (Alyssa), and grandson Otto James Hyland. She is also survived by two loving sisters Carolyn Steffen (Julie Burik) and Janice Steffen.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Norm and Kay Steffen, brother David Pierce Steffen, and sister Nancy Christine Anderson.
A memorial will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church at 1700 Westport Rd, Kansas City, Mo 64111 on Monday, April 7,2025 at 11:00am.
