Susan J. Fershee, age 79, died peacefully surrounded by close friends on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at St. Luke’s Hospital - Plaza, Kansas City, Missouri.
For 34 years, Susan and her late husband, Dr. George F. W. Hauck, shared a rich and meaningful life filled with family, travel, the arts, and community service.
Born with a delightfully inquisitive mind, Susan treasured her early years living at one of the few remaining Chautauquas in the U.S. Susan was a graduate of Carlisle High School (OH), Maryville College (TN), and the University of Missouri School of Law. As a Fulbright scholar in Germany, she cultivated a deep love for the country and its people.
During her many years practicing Missouri law, Susan’s passion for justice was evidenced by her commitment to her clients who sought Social Security disability benefits.
Susan was a member of the American Translators Association, and until her passing, she was an active member and lay leader at the Country Club United Methodist Church in Kansas City.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Marian Metcalf Fershee and James G. Fershee, as well as by her sister, Shirley Fershee Hostetter, and stepson, Erik Hauck.
She is survived by her sister, Sarah Fershee (Virginia Miles), and brother, Philip Fershee (Willa); her stepdaughters, Laura Burlingame and Linda Fellers; and her stepson, Steve, as well as their spouses.
Two generations of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, as well as a host of friends, will treasure Susan's memory through the years.
Memorial events for Susan’s family and friends will be held on Monday, July 13, 2026, at St.John’s United Methodist Church, 6900 Ward Parkway, Kansas City, MO. These include a reception from 10:00 am -11:45 am, and a memorial service at 12 noon.
Following the service, the inurnment will be held at Country Club United Methodist, 400 West 57th Street, Kansas City, MO, in the Memorial Garden.
Donations in Susan’s memory may be made to the Leukemia Research Foundation ( leukemiarf.org ) or to the American Cancer Society.
