We mourn the loss and celebrate the remarkable life of Rocklin Van "Rocky" Rude, who passed away peacefully on June 24, 2024, at the age of 79 in Kansas City, Missouri, after a battle with Metastatic Melanoma. Born on March 5, 1945, in Garnett, Kansas, Rocky's life was a symphony of innovation, passion, and dedication to his craft.
A respected sound engineer and inventive pioneer, Rocky began his music production career and business in 1969 with North Country Fair Music Store and Audio Associates. His expertise in providing top-notch sound and lighting took him on an extraordinary journey, touring with nationally known music groups. From concerts and television to movies, live radio, disco, studio recording, rodeo, theater, and symphony, Rocky's work left an indelible mark on every event he touched.
In the 1980s, Rocky transitioned to television production for sports events, bringing his keen eye and technical prowess to the field as a freelance video engineer. With a humble spirit, he would simply say he was "making pretty pictures." His work included college and professional football, basketball, soccer, hockey, and baseball, showcasing his versatility and commitment to excellence.
Rocky's craft was not just a profession but also his passion. He began playing drums and guitar in rock & roll bands during high school and college and continued his musical journey with the Blue River Ordnance band. He loved designing and building audio equipment and took great pleasure in mentoring aspiring music makers and television engineers. Rocky's passion for sound, video and music was matched only by his generosity in sharing his knowledge.
A proud member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 1259, Rocky officially retired from road work in 2013 when his beloved wife Annette retired. However, retirement did not slow him down; he continued to design and build sound equipment and provide sound and lights for area outdoor festivals.
Rocky was preceded in death by his parents, Keitha Kathleen Trammel and Phillip Russell Rude. He is survived by his devoted wife Annette Rude, his sons James Rude and Eric Van Rude, his brother Russ Rudy, and sister Phyllis Rude. Rocky lived in the Kansas City metro area since 1968, where his legacy of love and creativity will forever echo.
A celebration of Rocky's life will be held on July 21, from 2 to 5 pm, at The Ship in Kansas City, Missouri. An additional outdoor concert honoring Rocky is planned for the fall, ensuring his passion for music and innovation continues to inspire and uplift.
In remembering Rocky, we honor a man whose life was a blend of talent, kindness, and resilience. Rocky touched many lives with his generous spirit, profound knowledge, and unwavering dedication to his craft. He is deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
