Obituary

Robert (Bob) Dean Hyland was born on October 24, 1958, in Wichita, Kansas to Arthur Wesley Hyland and Marjorie Deane Moody Hyland. Bob passed away peacefully in his sleep on April22, 2025 in Kansas City, Missouri.

Bob grew up outside of St. Louis in Kirkwood, MO. He competed on the neighborhood swim team and was a member of his Boy Scout Troop 313 where he earned his Eagle Scout in 1976.

He graduated from Kirkwood High School in 1977 and moved to Lawrence, KS to pursue a degree in Structural Engineering at the University of Kansas. While at KU, Bob was a member of the KU Sailing team. He also stayed active in scouts as a young adult - leading two crews to Philmont Scout Ranch. It was during his time at KU that he was introduced to Suzanne Steffen who would soon become the love of his life.

Suzanne and Bob reconnected in 1982 when he moved to Tulsa, OK for his first job. The two moved to Kansas City, MO in 1983 and were married at Immanuel Lutheran Church in 1985.They purchased their first home together in 1986. In the first half of their marriage, Bob and Suzanne enjoyed sailing, camping, backpacking, and taking trips through Europe and Central America while renovating their beautiful Brookside Home.

Bob and Suzanne decided to begin the process of domestic adoption and in 1998, brought home their daughter Natalie. A few years later, in 2003, they adopted their son Liam.

Bob shared his love of sailing and the outdoors with his children as they got older. As a family, they spent many weekends camping and sailing at Clinton Lake where Bob grew the Kansas Sailing Association, raced Thistles, and mentored young sailors.

Bob took the opportunity to share his passion for scouting with Liam as he got older, eventually becoming scoutmaster of Liam's troop. He led many campouts, chaperoned two trips to the Boundary Waters, and completed his third and fourth backpacking trips through Philmont with the scouts of Troop 118.

He was a devoted father and husband—spending countless evenings at concerts with his daughter Natalie and dedicating the last two years to caring for his wife, Suzanne. An avidoutdoorsman, he continued to enjoy camping, sailing, and kayaking in the early parts of hisretirement. He also had a passion for woodworking and 3D modeling, things that brought him a sense of accomplishment as he battled Myelodysplastic Syndrome and Acute Myeloid Leukemia over the past year.

Bob is survived by his two wonderful children Natalie Kay Hyland and Liam Emory Hyland (Alyssa), and grandson Otto James Hyland. He is also survived by his two sisters, Patty Kelly and Melanie Hyland.

He is preceded in death by his wife Suzanne Steffen, parents Art and Margie Hyland, and niece Morgan Rogers.

A memorial will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church (1700 Westport Rd) in Kansas City, MO on Friday, May 9, 2025, at 11:00am.
