Phyllis Ann Hall Rick, 83, of Overland Park, KS passed away on April 2, 2023. She was born in Burlington, VT, on May 10, 1939, to the late John Philip and Helen MacKinnon Hall. Phyllis graduated from Bennington High School. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Boston University. She continued her education earning her Teaching Certificate in the state of Kansas, where she proudly taught 3rd grade for many years. Phyllis married the late Gregory George Philip Rick, Jr. MD in 1962, and they spent most of their married life in Stilwell and Overland Park, KS. They also enjoyed several years in Rochester, Minnesota while her husband attended the Mayo Clinic and later in Belleville, Illinois next to Scott Air Force Base. They were long-standing members, deacons, and volunteers of Village Presbyterian Church. Through her work with organizations like JCYM and PEO, Phyllis continued to positively impact the lives of others through education, even when no longer in the classroom. She worked directly with JCYM in the mid-1980s when they began partnering with the Shawnee Indian Mission Museum, working as a docent and in many volunteer positions. She was a long-time member of PEO and president of the organization from 1992-1994. Phyllis also treasured her own continuing education. She was a member of multiple book clubs and academic Bible studies. She opened her home several times to Blue Valley and the Arts. Phyllis was a student of the world, traveling regularly and especially enjoying the history, culture, and unique desserts of these many different places. She was a dear friend to many and treasured her time with friends at Red Hats and other groups of which she was a part, especially if they were talking while sharing some chocolate cake or crème brûlée. Phyllis is survived by three children: Gregory Rick of Marblehead, MA; John "Jay" Rick of Stilwell, KS; and Brooke Hoff of Paris, France. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Brady Rick, Caroline Rick, Philip Hoff, and Dylan Rick. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made out to the Alzheimer's Association (alz. org), and that all who want to remember "Crazy Phyl", as she called herself, take the time to celebrate life with a sweet dessert and a funny, even naughty, joke. A memorial service will be held, Tuesday, April 25, at 10:00 at Village Presbyterian Church, 641 Mission Road, Prairie Village, KS.
