Obituary

Michael Joseph Tierney, 71, died peacefully April 18, 2023, after a short battle with pneumonia. The visitation is at 10 a. m. Friday, April 28, at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 4101 E 105th Terrace, Kansas City, Mo. , followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 a. m. There will be a celebration of life at Sandtrap Bar & Grill, which was his Cheers place of joy, at 13037 Holmes Road. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to The Mike Tierney Trades Scholarship Fund. Mike is preceded in death by his parents, Charles "Bud" Tierney and Marguerite (Sullivan) Tierney. He is survived by his beloved wife, Chris (Skinner) Tierney; son Philip Tierney and daughter-in-law Catherine Betros Tierney; son Sean Tierney; daughter Danielle (Tierney) Seaman and son-in-law Jeff Seaman; five grandchildren, Madeline Blankenship, Ryan Tierney, Cameron Tierney, Finley Seaman and Noah Seaman. All of whom provided joy, laughter, and amazing moments of clarity. Although some thought Mike's Grandpa name of "Crappa" was disrespectful, Mike loved it, and capitalized on the name whenever possible. Maddie, preferred the more dignified name of Papa, and when she called for Papa, he was immediately at her command. Mike attended Our Lady of Good Counsel school and graduated from Rockhurst High School in 1970. As a young man, he served with the United States Air Force at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, Neb. He took pride in working on the Look Glass crew as an electronics support member. He was deeply relieved when he failed the artillery range and did not qualify to carry a gun. All bark, but no bite. After marrying in 1973, Mike and Chris returned to Kansas City, where he worked at Tierney Stationery. He played a key role at R&M Office Products, the business he founded with his father and brothers. Later he served as the project manager for Thrive and Rent Robin, LLC's maintenance and repair department. He was a hands-on guy, who took great joy in trying to right anything mechanical or structural. Mike was a car and motorcycle enthusiast and a skilled remodeler and handyman. He received the most joy from any project he felt was well done. Mike believed in the spirit of Santa Clause. He believed in the magic of toys and the joy they could provide. He always assumed that people were born to be kind, and it never failed to astound him that people could be anything but that. He was not built to withstand anything confrontational, and he did not enjoy a debate. He wanted people to treat each other with love and peace at all costs, and when that did not happen, he had a favorite teddy bear and knew how to make a rum and coke that could cure any hurt he felt. He was filled with knowledge he openly shared and a soft heart he sometimes tried to protect too enthusiastically. Mike was blessed with a large family who loved him and many dear lifelong friends. He would be so touched by all the kind and sometimes funny remembrances. He would be happy to know that people could see his heart, even if he tried to hide it. Thank you for sharing with us this celebration of his life and the confirmation that his life was full of meaning and purpose. This would have surprised him and made him cry. He will be missed.
