Obituary

Michael (Mike) Richard Slind passed away on October 20, 2025, in Overland Park, Kansas. He was 85.

Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on July 12, 1940, Mike grew up in that city and attended De La Salle High School, St. Thomas College (now St. Thomas University), and the University of Minnesota. He worked for Kansas City–based Marion Laboratories for 25 years, serving as a sales representative based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota; St. Louis, Missouri; and Kansas City. For more than 50 years, he lived in Overland Park, Kansas. In addition, for many years, he spent the summer months in Crosslake, Minnesota.

Golf was his foremost passion, and he was a longtime member of Brookridge Country Club. Mike was an avid follower of other sports as well, and had a special fondness for the Kansas City Royals. His other passions included playing bridge, working his way through the New York Times crossword, and reading a good legal thriller. Among family and friends, Mike was known for his wry, offbeat humor. He delighted (and occasionally confused) his children and grandchildren with obscure jokes, odd puns, and strange, old-timey sayings that they called “Slindisms.”

Mike was preceded in death by his father, Herman Martin Slind, and his mother, Margaret Burns Slind. He is survived by his wife, Ginger Slind, of Lenexa, Kansas; his son, Michael Patrick Slind (Bina Patel), of Palo Alto, California; his daughter, Jane (Kent) Jewett, of Lenexa; and his sister, Patricia (Joseph) Pollack, of Arvada, Colorado. Other survivors include his grandson, Justin (Michelle) Jewett; his granddaughters, Kasey (Davin) Edelen, Lindsey (Nathan) Dawes, and Jordan (Nick) Gardner; and seven great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life for Mike will take place on Friday, December 5, from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Novel Place apartments, 9651 Barkley Street, Overland Park, Kansas.

Those who wish to make a donation in his memory may consider giving to the Multiple Sclerosis Society or the American Lung Society.
