Obituary

On June 25, 2025, the world lost a spirited soul, Mary Margaret Simmons-Hapgood, affectionately known as Margaret, at the age of 66. Born on November 25, 1958, in Fort Worth, Texas, Margaret bid farewell to this world from her place of residence in Shawnee, Kansas. Her life ended too soon, but her memory will live on forever.

Margaret had a long career that spanned multiple facets of the caregiving world. Most recently, she served as a dedicated nurse at Garden Terrace of Overland Park to her important work as a cancer researcher at KU Medical Center, she left a mark in the medical field that showcased not only her intelligence but also her enormous heart. She held a Master’s in Nursing with a specialization in Oncology – because Margaret never settled for anything less than remarkable.

Outside of her professional pursuits, Margaret was an avid reader, a puzzle aficionado, and a devoted lake-lover, spending cherished times at the Lake of the Ozarks. She was a warm and compassionate person with a mile-long stubborn streak and a wicked sense of humor.

Preceded in death by her father Dayton Joseph Simmons, her mother Marguerite Heinzle-Eustice, sister Susan, and brothers Pat, Tom, and Jeff Simmons, and stepbrother Craig Eustice. Margaret’s legacy lives on in the memories of her surviving family: her brother Dayton Simmons, sister Joanna Simmons-Treas, and brother Bobby Simmons, along with step-siblings Brad and Judd Eustice. She leaves behind her loving husband, Curtis Hapgood, and beloved daughter Haley Hapgood, who will forever cherish her love and guidance.

Margaret was much more than her titles. She was a wonderful person, a compassionate nurse, devoted wife, loyal friend, and nurturing mother. Her presence brightened any room, much like the sun on a perfect day at her beloved lake.

Join us in celebrating Margaret's vibrant life on August 23, 2025, at the Edelweiss Clubhouse, 7201 Switzer, Merriam, KS 66203, from Noon until 6:00 PM. Let's gather to honor the woman who faced life’s puzzles with wit, warmth, and lived life on her terms.
