Obituary

Margaret (Margo) Mae Byron died peacefully at Care Haven Homes Residential Memory Care on May 25, two days after her 99th birthday. She was born in Holts Summit, Missouri to Herbert and Albertha Leonard. She attended Jefferson City High School where she met the love of her life, Byron L. Byron. After high school, she attended the University of Missouri where she joined the Pi Beta Phi sorority. She and Byron married about two years later on Easter Sunday, 1944 in Ventura, California near where Byron was stationed in the US Army. No matter what was put before her Margo would excel. In her teens she was an assistant to a Missouri Congressman at the capitol in Jefferson City. After Byron's military service he secured a job with Hallmark Cards and they moved to Kansas City where they lived for thirty-one years and raised two boys, Jim and John. During that time she was very active in the PTA and school and scouting activities for the boys. She also volunteered in numerous civic pursuits, was on the Board of the Richard Cabot Clinic and was active in the Village Presbyterian Church. She had a very successful career in residential real estate in Kansas City through the 60's and 70's earning awards as top agent numerous years. In 1980 Byron retired from a 30-year corporate career with Hallmark and they moved to Colorado Springs where they opened a Hallmark card shop in the Citadel Mall. They named the shop "Margo's" and within a year or two they opened a second store which they named "Byron's. " In the late 80's they sold both stores and began to enjoy retired life in their wonderful community of Kissing Camels Estates where they had many good friends. Margo loved entertaining, gardening and was an excellent cook. When Byron suffered a stroke in 2000 and was confined to a wheelchair Margo cared for him in the home with very little outside help for ten years, a testament to the strength and perseverance she demonstrated all her life. They moved back to Kansas City in 2009 and Byron took up residence in a nursing care facility where he lived until his death in 2013. Margo brought joy to him visiting every day. Margo is survived by son and daughter-in-law, John and Jo Ellen Byron, of Overland Park, Kansas; daughter-in-law Jeanne Byron, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, granddaughters Emily (Tyler) Petty of Overland Park, KS, and Shelly (Allen) Robertson of Monett, Missouri, as well as four great granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her son, James Patrick Byron, and Byron, her husband of 70 years. We are happy she will be reunited with her sister, Eleanor, who passed away in her teens as the result of a car accident. She will also be reunited with her brother, Dorrie, and her parents. Margo had such a full life and was loving to each and every person she met. Her years with Byron were filled with many years of laughter as both had such a wonderful sense of humor and provided many more years of stories to relive. Margo was up for just about anything put in front of her and she would grasp it with all she had. She was treasured by all her caregivers--Neema and Brandi, to name a few. We are very grateful Margo was blessed with so many people in her life that loved her. We especially thank all the wonderful people at Care Haven Homes and Monarch Hospice and Palliative Care for loving and taking such good care of Margo on her journey to her next life. We will have a Celebration of Life at the home of John and Jo Ellen Byron, 11108 W 119th Terrace, Overland Park, Kansas, Friday, June 16 from 4 to 7 pm.
