Obituary

Kevin Cleve Powell, 68, passed away peacefully with his wife, Donna, by his side on March 14, 2026. Born on September 27, 1957, in Kansas City, Missouri, Kevin lived a life filled with passion, dedication, and love for the things and people that mattered most to him.

Kevin graduated from Shawnee Mission North High School and went on to attend Emporia State University. His professional life was marked by an impressive 45-year career at the JCPenney distribution center. Over the years, Kevin worked in various departments, from the docks to loss prevention. During his time there, he formed many meaningful friendships that enriched his life.

A true car enthusiast, Kevin’s love for automobiles was unparalleled. Over the course of 50 years, he owned approximately 300 cars. His knowledge of cars—spanning makes, models, and years—was encyclopedic. Whether it was answering a question about a specific vehicle or engaging in the thrill of buying and selling cars, Kevin found immense joy in every aspect of his automotive passion. He relished the hunt for the perfect car deal and took pride in both the negotiation process and the satisfaction of each transaction.

After retiring from JCPenney, Kevin embraced a quieter life at home with his wife, Donna Nelson. He enjoyed working in the yard, planning his next car acquisition, watching old movies with Donna, and sharing moments with their cats—though Ms.Molly held a special place in his heart as his favorite.

Kevin and Donna enjoyed going to estate sales and garage sales together over the years. He enjoyed looking for unique items as much as talking with people about the history behind the finds.

Music was another cornerstone of Kevin’s life. He had a deep appreciation for Rock and Roll as well as Country music, and possessed a wonderful singing voice. Donna cherished listening to him sing songs that held special meaning for them both.

Kevin was known for his willingness to help others. Whether it was moving heavy furniture or caring for pets, he was always ready to lend a hand to friends in need. Kevin is survived by his beloved wife Donna Nelson, his nieces Andrea and Melanie; and his nephew Nicholas. He was preceded in death by his mother, Patricia Powell; his father, Frank Powell; and his sister Lisa Powell.

Kevin’s memory will live on through those who knew him and loved him. May his legacy bring comfort to all who were fortunate enough to share in his journey.
