Keith
Buchanan
Jun 29, 1963 — Mar 9, 2025
Keith Marc Kee Huat Buchanan, a man whose existence could only be described as a delightful blend of engineering precision, creative flair, and an unending supply of groan-worthy puns, has departed us at the age of 61. Born on June 29, 1963, in the scenic landscapes of New Zealand, Keith died in his chosen hometown of Kansas City, MO, on March 9, 2025.
With multinational roots that spanned continents—including early schooling in England and Scotland—Keith was a gentle soul with a big heart and an even bigger sense of humor. His early education undoubtedly contributed to his sharp wit and penchant for bad puns, which he brandished with the skill of a master craftsman. Later in life, his Chinese heritage served him well as an enthusiastic and skillful tea master. And to honor and celebrate his British side, he could often be seen sporting a kilt for special occasions whilst avoiding strong breezes.
Professionally, Keith donned many hats. As an engineering draughtsman at Zahner, a specialty metal fabrication company, and later at Ruskin equipment manufacturer, he blended precision with creativity, laying down lines and curves that would make any blueprint proud. As the coproprietor of the iconic and locally beloved Temple Slug retail store and the co-founder of the cozy Teahouse and Coffeepot next door, Keith dutifully ran both family businesses with proficiency and professionalism. He was also a friendly, fair and diligent landlord for several Midtown properties.
Keith's passions were as varied as his careers. An aficionado of 80s British music, he could often be found at concerts dancing to tunes that never went out of style. His brilliant, unique furniture and industrial designs were a testament to his constant creative tinkering and a mind that thrived at the intersection of design and engineering. A world traveler, he often brought back great stories and Keith-style perspectives on different places and cultures. He cared deeply for his parents, loved his friends fiercely, and was utterly devoted to his feline companions, who surely tolerated his jokes because they had extra lives to spare.
He earned a Master of Design (MDES) in Human-Centered Product Design from the Illinois Institute of Technology, a title he wore with humility yet accomplished pride. He was both an avid student and an adjunct Design professor at the Kansas City Art Institute. Preceded in death by his beloved stepfather, Robert "Bob" Gamer, Keith leaves behind his mother, May Lin Gamer, and a cadre of cherished friends that he collected over many decades.
Details regarding services for Keith will be provided at a later date. In the meantime, those wishing to honor his memory can do so by sharing a bad pun, listening to some classic 80s British tunes, or simply enjoying a cup of tea while tinkering with a creative project.
Keith, you were a loyal friend, a gentle spirit, and a brilliant mind. And though you've left us, your legacy—and your delightful knack for making us chuckle—will endure.
