Karen Aline Read, affectionately known as KK, passed away on February 1, 2024, at the age of 51. She was born on January 30, 1973, in Rolla, Missouri to Clayton and Melba Read, and passed awaysurrounded by family and friends in Kansas City, Missouri. Karen fought a valiant battle against cancer for the past 2 ½ years. Although she lost her battle, she leaves behind a legacy that will be cherished by all who knew her.
Karen graduated from Rolla High School in 1991. She continued her education at the University ofMissouri-Columbia where she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. Karen graduated magna cumlaude from MU School of Journalism in 1995 and went on to obtain her Juris Doctorate from the MUSchool of Law in 1998, where she was honored as a member of the Order of the Coif.Throughout her legal career, Karen made significant contributions to the field of law, practicing for 22 years at Shook, Hardy and Bacon, followed by work for the Missouri Attorney General's office, and concluding her practice at Baker Sterchi, Cowden & Rice. Karen was a member of the Missouri Bar Association, the Kansas Bar Association, the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association, and the Missouri Organization of Defense Lawyers. Karen's practice focused on civil litigation and she litigated cases in state and federal courts across the country. Karen also completed the International Association of Defense Council Trial Attorney program at Stanford Law School. Karen's expertise and commitment to her work were admired by colleagues and clients alike.
In addition to practicing law, Karen had a passion for helping others. For over a decade, and even during her illness, Karen served as a volunteer trainer and dog whisperer at The Pet Connection. Karen's love for dogs was evident to everyone who met her and she had a remarkable ability to connect with animals. Karen's dedication to and advocacy for dogs in need of a loving home were unparalleled, making her a true champion for the well-being of all furry friends.
Karen also enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling, spending summers in the pool, and gathering to watch Chiefs, Royals, and Mizzou games. Karen's kindness, warm heart, and infectious laugh truly touched those lucky enough to know her. Karen's vibrant spirit will be remembered through the memories shared by those who were fortunate enough to be in her presence.
Karen leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. She is survived by her loving husband Chris Childs and stepson Tyler Karns, of Kansas City; her parents Clayton & Melba Read, of Rolla; her sister Tricia Lewis, and niece Ashlyn Lewis, of Sullivan; other family members and countless friends; and her beloved dogs Bear and Mika. Karen was preceded in death by paternal grandparents Leonard & Lorene Read and maternal grandparents Basil & Selma Leach and furry friends Milo and Nala.
A celebration of Karen's life will be held at a later date, where friends, family, and loved ones will gather, tell stories, and honor KK's memory.

KK's departure has left a void in the lives of those who loved her, but her spirit and legacy will live on forever. May she rest in eternal peace, knowing that she touched the lives of many with her exceptional warmth and generous heart.
