John Jack
Himpel
Jun 15, 1949 — Mar 20, 2026
John F. “Jack” Himpel Jr., 76, of Tonganoxie, Kansas, passed away March 20, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 15, 1949, in Lawrence, Kansas, the son of John “Jack” Sr. and Margie (Coburn) Himpel.
Jack was a lifelong Tonganoxie resident. He graduated from Tonganoxie High School in 1967. As a young man, he spent many summers working on his Himpel grandparents’ family farm or helping his dad with construction. Those experiences helped shape his work ethic and appreciation for working with his hands. After graduation, he joined the workforce and spent many years in farm-related industries and construction. Jack had a deep appreciation for farming life. He found purpose in long days of haying, caring for cows, and working the farm.
Jack also enjoyed spending time with the people he loved. Family functions were a highlight, and he loved seeing the kids. Few things mattered more than supporting his nieces and nephews, whether it was showing up in the stands at countless games, attending school activities, or simply being there whenever he was needed. When not on the farm or supporting his nieces and nephews, Jack could often be found enjoying a cup of coffee or a meal at the local café, playing cards, or visiting with friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Arthur “Rocky” Himpel, and his brother-in-law, Ron Bellman. He is survived by his brothers, Mark (Debbie) Himpel, of Tonganoxie, and Jeff (Jacki) Himpel of Basehor; sisters Georgina Bellman, Tucson, AZ; Beverly (Sam) Wiles, Susan (Jim) Herrstrom, Diane (Jerry) Bretthauer, and Bobbi (Mike) McClellan, all of Tonganoxie; and his sister-in-law Mary Himpel of Tonganoxie; 22 beloved nieces and nephews; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
A celebration of life will be held from 12:30-2:30 pm on Saturday, March 28th, 2026, at the Tonganoxie VFW. Memorials can be made to Team Tongie at P.O. Box 82, Tonganoxie, KS 66086.
