Jo Ann Browning Henry Royster, 87, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2023, in Leavenworth, Kansas. A native of the Grand Prairie in Arkansas County, Jo Ann was born on October 16, 1935, to the late Malcolm and Amelia Browning of St. Charles, Arkansas. Jo Ann graduated from St. Charles High School in 1953 and received her Bachelor's degree from Henderson State Teachers College in 1957, and went on to earn a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Arkansas in 1993. Upon graduation from Henderson State, Jo Ann was first employed by the Little Rock Public School System in 1957 to teach mathematics at Central High School. During that troubled first year of teaching, she stood firmly on the side of allowing all students the right to an equal public education. She was terminated by the school board for her stand and reinstated by order of the court. Thus began Jo Ann's long and rewarding career as a teacher of mathematics at the middle school, high school, and college levels. From her early days teaching at Central High School to her many years teaching at Pulaski Academy and then to her final years teaching young teachers "how to teach math" at the University of Central Arkansas, she was completely invested in her students' success and their overall well-being. If you are from Little Rock, you likely know someone who sat in her class. Second to her love of teaching was her love of travel. Jo Ann enjoyed traveling with her group of lifelong friends, exploring and studying other cultures throughout the USA and abroad. While in her early seventies, she traveled to France with her forever friend, Kay; neither of them spoke a word of French. Together, they drove around France for a month enjoying the world as lovely Southern ambassadors; yes, we were terrified. Jo Ann loved adventure, and at the age of 75 she went white-water rafting for the first time, in the mountains of Colorado with her daughter-in-law and youngest grandchild. Jo Ann's love for her family was the pinnacle of her life and she was happiest surrounded by all those who loved her in return. She was immensely proud of her family, keeping an extensive collection of organized family photo albums that contained cherished memories for those who call her "Granny" and "Mom". She enjoyed marking major milestones in her life and the lives of her family with pictures and handwritten captions, using the photo albums as her personal journal. Jo Ann is survived by her first husband, Dr. Morrison Henry of Cincinnati, Ohio, her brother, Bill (Peggy) Browning of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and her beloved children: David (Lisa) Henry of Omaha, Nebraska, Diane (Andy) Czuchry of Atlanta, Georiga and Steven Henry of Leavenworth, Kansas. She fiercely loved her precious grandchildren: Rachael Henry, Rebecca Henry, Drew Czuchry, Parker Henry, and Gabrielle Henry. Jo Ann's love extended beyond her immediate family to the children of her late second husband, George Royster. George's children, Angie (Steve) Hernandez of Austin, Texas, and Eric (Andrea) Royster of New Orleans, Louisiana, provided Jo Ann with even more grandchildren to love: Paige, Ashleigh, Georgia, Zachary, Joshua, Isabella, Benjamin and Cecilia. Jo Ann is survived by a large extended family who remember her fondly, especially for her delicious homemade cookies. She was a repository of family history and recipes, which read like the history of Arkansas. She was a proud Arkansan, through and through. A service celebrating Jo Ann's life will be held later this year in Little Rock, Arkansas. In lieu of flowers, to honor Jo Ann's lifelong commitment to the education of all students, the family respectfully asks that you consider donations to Pulaski Academy in Jo Ann's name, to help support deserving students and the programs and initiatives that make Pulaski Academy unique. https://giving. veracross. com/pa/AF
