Don Fitzgerald was born February 1, 1923 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Don E. Fitzgerald, Sr. and Ethel Marie (Grennon) Fitzgerald. He passed away February 23, 2015 at Rose Estates in Overland Park. A memorial will be arranged at a later date. Don attended Evanston Township High School before moving to Kansas City, where he graduated from Southwest High School. He attended the University of Missouri, played freshman football and joined Sigma Chi Fraternity. He was a Life Loyal Sig. He joined the Army Air Corps after Pearl Harbor and served in the 15th Air Force, 301st Bomb Group in southern Italy as a radio operator/gunner. After the war, Don joined his father's business, Central Pontiac, at 1801 McGee Street. He was a sales manager until the business was sold in 1953, when he joined Universal Underwriters, calling on automobile dealers. The rest of his career was spent in commercial lending with a variety of companies and banks including Merchants Produce Bank, Westport Bank and the Associates. An avid golfer, Don was a founding member of Brookridge Golf and Country Club (now Brookridge Golf & Fitness) in Overland Park, a volunteer for the KCGA and a marshal at several area courses. He also traveled to play famous courses in the US, Scotland and Ireland. Don and his wife Marita McGinnis Fitzgerald were married for 55 years, spending most of those years in Overland Park. She preceded him in death in 2006. They had four children: Lucia Fitzgerald of McDonough, GA; Don Fitzgerald, III (wife Nancy) of Lenexa; Veronica Fitzgerald Carlew Jenkins, deceased; and Christina Fitzgerald (husband Sam Nelson) of Toledo, OH. He leaves three grandchildren: Greg Carlew, Sarah Carlew (husband Samuel Bustamante), and Madeleine Fitzgerald. He also leaves a nephew, James Bryan (wife Lucy). His sister Virginia preceded him in death.
