Charles "Dwight" Briggs, 90, of Shawnee, Kansas made his transition to the next chapter of the amazing adventure we call life on June 25, 2022 surrounded in love by family. Dwight was born July 2, 1931 in the Redford area of Detroit to Davy J. and Evelyn Briggs and grew up in the community, graduating from Redford High School. He received his Bachelor's degree from Albion College and did graduate work at Wayne State University. Upon graduation he was drafted into the Army during the Korean War, serving in the Quartermaster Corps at Ft. Bragg, NC, and was honorably discharged with a rank of Sergeant. He returned home to Detroit, built a home, started a family and took a job at J. L. Hudson's department store in accounting. He became controller of a subsidiary of the store and in 1971 he and his young family were transferred to Minneapolis where he worked in a similar capacity with the newly-created Dayton Hudson Corporation. Again in 1977 his career brought him to Kansas City working for what would later become Sprint. Post-retirement he continued to work, returning to the business he learned from his father of designing cabinetry for commercial and residential customers, fully retiring in 2009. In the 1980s he was drawn to attend church at Unity Temple on the Plaza where he enjoyed taking classes, worshipping, and where he met his future wife, Doris. Their mutual interest in studying metaphysics, spirituality, and the wonders of the Universe drew them together and in time they joined the growing congregation at Unity Church of Overland Park. They were married at the church in 1995 and continue to be active members. They enjoyed taking classes, serving on a variety of committees, as greeters, ushers, participating in study groups, the fellowship and friendship of fellow members, and were among the first group to be certified as Unity Practitioners after an intensive course of study. Dwight was known as a kind, loving man with a huge heart and a wonderful sense of humor. Perhaps his three greatest loves were his family, his faith and love of God, and the KU Jayhawks Men's Basketball team, whom he fondly called, "his boys. " He was overjoyed in January and again in March of this year as he became a great grandfather to two beautiful children born within six weeks of each other. He leaves his loved ones with so many beautiful, joyful memories and is survived by his loving wife, Doris Briggs of the home, son Mark (Tara) Briggs of Morganton, GA; daughter Wendy Briggs of Kansas City, KS; grandsons Cameron Briggs of North Kansas City, MO; Taylor Briggs-Whitaker, Overland Park, KS; granddaughters Lindsay (Michael) Kline of Summerville, SC; Katie (Hugh) Cronin of Mount Pleasant, SC, his beautiful great-grandchildren, Lily Kline and David Cronin, and many relatives and friends. The family would like express their thanks and gratitude to the wonderful doctors and staff at the University of Kansas Medical Center who took such good care of their loved one in his final years.
