Obituary

Brenda Lorraine Counts Wright, 69, made her transition from earth to Glory at her Kansas City, Missouri home on Tuesday morning, December 10, 2013. Brenda was the last of seven children born to Arthur and Grace Counts on Wednesday, February 23, 1944. Along with her parents, three of her four sisters (Barbara Fisher, Arthelle Myers, and Katherlyn Counts) and one brother (Gerald Counts) crossed over before her. Raised in a Christian home, Brenda grew up in Bethel AME Church of Kansas City, Missouri, participating in the choir, Sunday School, Class and Prayer meetings. She was a Vacation Bible School Teacher there. At Carver Bible Institute she participated in "Saturday Sing". When she returned to Kansas City, she became a member of St. James United Methodist Church under the leadership of Rev. Emanuel Cleaver, II. Brenda married Carl (Sultan) Green, and was blessed with one son, Carl M. Green of the home. She later married Robert Wright who preceded her in death; and subsequently, developed a very special relationship with Robert Mathis who also departed before her. A Vine Street native, Brenda attended Wendall Phillips Elementary School. Brenda had a love for learning and information. After graduating Central High School, Class of 1962, she continued her education at Central Missouri State Teacher's College currently known as University of Central Missouri of Warrensburg, Missouri, and Penn Valley Community College of Kansas City, Missouri. Brenda spent her childhood and teenage years in Kansas City, Missouri; then relocated to Los Angeles, California where she raised her young son. Brenda pursued a professional career as a Computer Systems Programmer with Mattel Corporation in Los Angeles, California. She returned to Kansas City, Missouri where she continued working as a programmer with TWA, and Worldspan where she retired. Affectionately called "Becky", "Bren" and "Bren Bren", she brought great joy to her family and friends. She was exceptionally accomplished in almost any area of interest she determined to become skilled in: sewing, quilting, knitting and more. She also had a noticeable natural talent for bowling. An avid reader, she had a special affinity for detective stories; and a passion for shoes, handbags, coats and sterling silver rings. Many have been blessed by Brenda's deep caring and unyielding devotion. As a mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend she exceeded the definition of love. Brenda was quiet, strong, resilient and fought with everything she had. She was simply beautiful inside and out, and will be missed by all who were blessed enough to have experienced her smile. Brenda's memory will forever be cherished by her only child, Carl M. Green; her brother, Stanley L. Counts, Sr. ; her sister, and best and inseparable friend, Carolyn J. Anderson; her niece/sister, Teresa E. Walsh; her grandchildren, Carl Bray and Jordan Johnson; her great-grandchildren, Carvon, Emonie and Cayden Bray. She is also remembered by a long list of nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews, extended family and friends who each hold her dear. A Memorial Celebration of Life will be held at St. James United Methodist Church of Kansas City, Missouri on Saturday, December 21, 2013 at 11 a. m. The family asks that contributions be made to St. James UMC for Missions. Please place "Brenda Wright - Missions" in the memo.
