After traveling to over 35 countries (that we know of) spanning every continent except Antarctica our mother, Betty Alexander Robertson 76, peacefully embarked upon her final journey surrounded by her children Monday April 3, 2017. When not traveling Betty was proud to return home to Prairie Village, Ks. She was preceded in death by her parents: Dr. Philip L. and Mary (Cammack) Byers; brother Philip C. Byers, sister in law Carolyn Byers; nieces and nephews: John Byers, Susan Traff, David Byers, Christopher Byers; grand nieces a nephews: Mitchell, Cammack, Philip, Allie, Audrianna, Brody, and Dawson. Betty graduated second in her class at Sunset Hill (Kansas City, Missouri) where she captained the women's basketball team before attending Goucher College (Maryland) and Kansas University. While raising a family she took night school to learn computer programming and become a Certified Travel Consultant. She worked in the travel industry for over 20 years rising quickly as a branch manager at International Tours and opened their first Cruise Store. Upon retiring Betty provided in home care for her mother for roughly 20 years while continuing to work part time. Betty will be remembered fondly for her warm, engaging personality, which allowed her to instantly connect with total strangers as if they were best friends. She was passionate about experiencing different cultures which was the root of her love of travel. She cared deeply about family ties and sought to keep far flung family members connected. She cultivated diverse interests especially later in life including cooking, crafting, painting, digital photography, book clubs and engaged in a busy social life. Betty knew how to throw a party. She leaves behind close friends Kay and Dan Chase, Wally and Diane Meyer, Maryann Dolan, Ron and Mary Penrose, and Phil McManus amongst many others. Her children cherish memories of her creativity, elaborate holiday meals and decorations. Her sons will always envy her hook shot.
