It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ann Marie Tutko, lovingly known as “Annie” to her friends. Ann was born on March 12, 1960, in Rochester, New York, to Alan Fredric Wilms and Mary (Syracusa) Wilms. She passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at the age of 65, surrounded by her beloved husband, Dan, and her sister, Suzy, after a courageous battle with lung cancer.
Ann spent most of her life in Kansas City, Missouri, a place she proudly called home. It was there that she met the love of her life, Dan Tutko. The two were married on June 19, 1999, on the island nation of Jamaica. Devoted partners for over 26 years, Ann and Dan shared a life full of adventure, creativity, and deep love. Ann was also a devoted caretaker to many rescue cats -some cherished indoor companions and others lovingly housed outdoors in heated shelters.
Ann and Dan spent many years working together in the world of upscale dining and hospitality, gaining a deep appreciation for food, wine, and community. Together, they fulfilled a dream by opening their own bar and grill, CODA, in downtown Kansas City in 2009. Featuring live music and local talent, CODA became a beloved part of the city’s vibrant nightlife. After many successful years, they sold the business in 2014.
Ann had a deep love for live music, great food, and a well-made cocktail. She was spirited, passionate, and fun-loving, someone who embraced life fully and encouraged others to do the same.
In her earlier years and young adulthood, Ann was a gifted creative, expressing herself through oil painting, macrame, and sketching. She was also the heart and soul of many softball teams, playing catcher with fearless determination. Though not a typical catcher, Ann approached both the game and life with courage, grit, and wholehearted commitment.
Ann was preceded in death by her mother on September 14, 2014, and her father on November 1, 2025. She is survived by her loving husband, Daniel W. Tutko of Kansas City, Missouri; and her sisters: Jennifer A. Allen of Williamsburg, Virginia; Karen (Gia) M.Ward of Port Richey, Florida; and Suzanne (Suzy) Koelling of Olathe, Kansas.
A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. Ann will be laid to rest in Colorado on June 19, 2026, surrounded by family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Cancer Research Institute in honor of Ann “Annie” Tutko.
