Obituary

Ann Lynn Smith was born Ann Lynn Mclean on June 3, 1943, in Great Bend, Kansas. She grew up in Lewis, Kansas, a small farming community that included her aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents. She enjoyed growing up in a close family group and maintaining contact with her cousins throughout her adult life. She graduated from Lewis High School in 1961 and moved to Manhattan Kansas the following year to attend Kansas State University.

Ann married Herb Langland in 1962 and they had two children, Jennifer and Timothy.  Herb and Ann were later divorced. Ann married Woody Smith in 1975 and with Woody's three children, Allyson, Sabrina, and Wade, they became a family of seven. During their marriage, they lived in Topeka, Coffeyville, and Independence, Kansas. In 2002, they retired to Lenexa, KS.

Ann returned to college after starting her family and graduated from Washburn University with a degree in History. She then graduated from Washburn Law School and had a successful career as an attorney.  Her work included serving as a prosecuting attorney in Shawnee and Montgomery counties, child support enforcement, and as a defense attorney.

Music played an important role in Ann's life.  She grew up in a musical household and enjoyed music throughout her life. She often sang in church or community choirs.  She was an avid reader and enjoyed participating in book clubs. In retirement, she became a member of PEO.  Ann valued her friends and family and spending time with them. She enjoyed conversation and learning about others. She was known for her vast knowledge and the ability to easily recall and share facts about family, friends, or world history. She enjoyed gardening and growing flowers in her yard. She also loved cats and had many pet cats over the years that brought her happiness. She was a member of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church.

Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Ruth and Grover J. Mclean, and brother Larry Mclean.  She is survived by her husband, Woody D.
