Alan Douglas Whitten, 54, of Pittsburg, KS, passed away on June 5, 2022. Doug was born in Fresno, CA, May 13, 1968. He was adopted by Andrew Duncan Whitten and Grace (Williams) Whitten. He spent most of his teen years in Sparks, Nevada. Growing up he found his love for music. His dad always wanted him to play football, but Doug's heart was in the band. Doug participated in Drum Corp International marching baritone for the Blue Devils (1987, 1988) and the Velvet Knights (1986). He joined the Army playing in the US Army Band and was stationed in Berlin, Germany during the fall of the Berlin Wall. He was a veteran of the Gulf War and he continued to serve in the Army National Guard bands for many years. He received a Bachelor of Music in Tuba Performance from the University of Nevada, Reno, a Master of Music from Boise State University, and a Doctorate in Education from Boise State University. Doug Whitten was the Director of Athletic Bands and Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at Pittsburg State University at the time of his passing. Prior to his appointment at Pitt State, Dr. Whitten was the Associate Director of Athletic Bands at Boise State University, Interim Director of the Marching Band at The University of Dayton and taught public school bands in Idaho and Nevada. Doug also owned a mobile bicycle repair shop, The Wheel Doctor KC. He enjoyed riding miles on road bikes or hitting trails with his mountain bike. Doug was active in the roller derby community as a coach, referee, and competitor known as "Wheelzebub. " Doug is preceded in death by his father and mother. Doug is survived by fiancé Kristie Browns, daughter Elliot Grace Whitten, son Catcher Douglas Whitten, sisters Cindi, Alexis and Jeannie, nieces, nephews, cousins, and his dog, Pivot. Doug was loved by everyone that met him. Doug was amazing at everything he put his heart into. He never did anything halfway, always engaging his full energy and talent into every project and every person involved around him. His students are his living legacy of love and education. He truly cared about everyone that he was able to share his love of music with. Doug is deeply missed by his family and his many friends. He is gone too soon from our lives. Service A memorial gathering is being planned for 7 p. m. on Tuesday, June 21, in the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts, Pittsburg State University.
