Obituary

Alan Jonfre Airington passed away peacefully on June 15, 2015, after a long struggle with illness. The family was at his bedside at the Kansas City VA hospital (where he received the best of care). Jonfre will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his mother Beulah and father "Daddy Gene" Airington. He was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1926 into a very loving family including aunts, uncles, a grandmother and a great-grandmother whom he dearly loved. After attending Northeast High School, at 17, Jonfre immediately enlisted in the U. S. Navy during World War II. He served on several aircraft carriers but primarily on the Rudyerd Bay. After the war, he attended college for 2 years in Minneapolis. Returning to Kansas City he met and married Phyllis Mimran on June 28, 1956. They were happily married for 59 years. Jonfre is survived by his brother Donald D. Airington (Sharon), children: Cathy Rae (Paul) Smallwood, Claudia Grace (Neil) Meyers and his son Alan Lee, seven grandchildren (Matthew, Amy, Sarah, Patricia, Roland, Zachariah and Lance), and 11 great-grandchildren. He was a long time employee of Sears covering a multi state sales district working out of Wichita, Kansas where he and his wife Phyllis lived for 22 years. Following retirement, they lived in Phoenix, Arizona. In 2005, they returned to Kansas City where he spent his remaining years. He was very proud of his World War II service in the Navy and remained in touch with shipmates throughout his life, attending several reunions. He especially cherished his honor flight to Washington D. C. where he visited the World War II memorial along with other veterans. Burial will be on Thursday, June 25, 11 AM at the Veterans Cemetery, Higginsville, Missouri. There will be a memorial service there as well as a Navy Honor Guard ceremony. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Kansas City Church of God at 3100 So. Chrysler Ave. , Independence, Missouri, 64055, or Missouri Veterans Cemetery Assistance League, Inc. , 20109 Business Highway 13, Higginsville, MO 64037
