Murlin Ray Hodgell


Dr. Murlin Ray Hodgell, Stilwell, Kansas, died September 23, 2014 at the age of 90. Born in Mankato, Kansas on January 6, 1924, Hodgell is remembered as an architect, engineer, urban planner and former navy pilot. During high schooh, he assisted noted artist John Steuart Curry in painting the “John Brown” murals in the Kansas Capital building. As an accredited professor, Dr. Hodgell taught at many universities in the United States and abroad.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Billie Ro Jean Hodgell; their three daughters Janet Butler, Mary Jo and Kristen Lee Hodgell; by his second wife, Musetta Gordon Hodgell; and by his brother and sister, Robert Hodgell and Carol Neff. He is survived by his son and family, Kevin, Shirley and grandson, Daniel Hodgell of Stilwell.

    I am grateful for the life of Dr. Hodgell. Thanks to his service and to the service of others in our armed forces, my family and I have been able to lead our lives in freedom and peace.
