Melvin (Mel) James Canaan, 94, of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Wednesday, August 16, 2017, in Olathe, Kansas at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn (Carol) and Bill Rauh.

Mel was born on Saturday, January 13, 1923, in Alva, Oklahoma. He served in the Marines during World War II. Melvin married Edna Blehm on August 24, 1946, in Billings, Montana. They moved to Blackwell in 1978.

Mel was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Edna; one sister, Ethel Rose; and three brothers, Bill, Orville, and Don Canaan. He leaves behind his daughter, Carolyn (Carol) Rauh and her husband Bill of Olathe, Kansas; a grandson, Christopher William Rauh and his wife Eetung of Broomfield, Colorado; one granddaughter, Michelle Rauh Scovill and her husband Brian of Olathe, Kansas; and four great-grandchildren, William Rauh, Madeleine Rauh, Garrison Scovill, and Britton Scovill; and two sisters, Dorothy Akers of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Beverly Cushman of Enid, Oklahoma; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

His memorial service will held at the American Red Cross, 1313 W. Ferguson Ave., Blackwell, OK on Sunday, September 3 at 10:00 AM.
