Mark Bretches died peacefully at the Olathe Health Hospice House in Olathe, Kansas, on May 22, 2021. He was born to Bill and Alice Bretches on February 6, 1964, in Santa Barbara, CA. He was the truly beloved youngest of six sons and grew up in Santa Maria, CA. He lived in Overland Park, KS.
Mark is preceded in death by both parents and eldest brother Raymond. He is survived by his son, Nathan Bretches, as well as brothers Garrett, Wayne, Norman, and Dale. He is also survived by his nieces, Alison Bretches and Verona Bretches, and nephew Ray Bretches.
Mark graduated from Santa Maria High School in Santa Maria California, attended UCLA, attained his Bachelor’s Degree from California State Polytechnic University in Political Science and his Master’s Degree from the University of California at Irvine, also in Political Science. He continued to study sociopolitical issues throughout his life.
Mark was devoted to his son, Nathan, and to all of his family and friends; and, Mark was committed to the well-being of others. He served the latter not only personally but professionally as a talented and successful senior investigator for the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission combating discrimination in the workplace.
Mark’s joys included museums, the New York Yankees, Dallas Cowboys, travel with family and friends, the outdoors, and birds of prey. All who knew Mark experienced his love, rare depth of kindness, and his commitment to peace and to the welfare of humankind. Mark, you will always be loved and in our hearts and memory.

The family would like to thank the staff at Olathe Health Hospice and Hospice House for their excellent, sensitive, and attentive care of Mark in his last months and days of life.
