Linda Joan Eilers

Linda Joan Eilers, 69, of Wichita, KS, passed away with her loved ones by her side on April 14th, 2018 at Kansas City Hospice House. She fought through 16 years of congestive heart failure.

Linda was born in Jersey City, NJ on April 29th, 1948 to Glendora and John Stelling. Mid-elementary Glendora and Linda moved back to Hutchinson, KS to stay with Linda’s grandmother after her parents separated. Glendora met Gilbert Fayette while living in Hutchison and they married in 1963. Gibert was always who Linda considered her Father as he showed her what true loved looked like. He enriched her love for old movies and theater productions. Linda graduated from Hutchinson High School and then went to the Junior College in Hutchinson before transferring to Wichita State University to obtain a degree in Education. She also received her Masters through Wichita State. Linda was a 3rd generation teacher.

Linda taught in Oberlin, KS and South Haven, KS before taking a break to become a nanny. She then transitioned to teaching at Rainbows United, Sunny Side Elementary in Wichita and then Special Education for Cheney, KS . During this time she met her husband Ron Eilers in the Fall of 1976. She was wanting to learn to play backgammon and was charmed by his Datsun Z Car. He quickly proposed on Mother’s Day of 1977 because he knew she was a keeper and a special gem on this Earth. They were married on August 7th, 1977 in the Unity Church in Wichita, KS.

Less than 8 years later, their daughter Lisa arrived on May 10th, 1985. Linda then enjoyed being a stay-at-home Mom, running an in-home daycare for a few years, volunteering in Lisa’s classrooms and schools, teaching Sunday School at Ascension Lutheran, as well as being one of Lisa’s Girl Scouts leaders for many years.  She returned to substitute teaching in the mid-90s. In the early 2000s, she noticed she couldn’t keep up with the 1st grade class she was subbing for and becoming out-of-breath going up and down stairs. It was discovered she had a scarred left-ventricle and was in congestive heart failure.

For the last 16 years of her life, she continued to be a homemaker, love on her cats, supporting her daughter, who followed her footsteps to become a teacher and then helping care for her husband Ron. They enjoyed traveling while they still could. She lived for her grandchildren and loved every second she got with them.

Linda is survived by her husband of 40 years, Ron, daughter Lisa and spouse Chris Coonts, and 2 grandchildren, Lyla and Miles of Lenexa, KS. She is also survived by her Aunt Phyllis Powell and cousin Brad Powell of Hutchinson, KS.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the following organizations. Lifeline Animal Placement and Protection, Inc of Wichita, KS. Linda had a deep love for cats and compassion for their well-being. Christ Lutheran Master’s Plan of Overland Park, KS. Linda lived for her grandchildren and loved them with all her heart. She would have loved to continue to see their school grow and flourish as they continue their education at Christ Lutheran. Their Master’s Plan focuses mainly on the expansion and addition to the school.

Ron, Lisa and family – My sincere condolences on the loss of your wife and mother. Linda was such a dear friend to my mom, Luella, and I know mom cherished Linda’s friendship and loved getting out to the movies and lunch whenever they were able to. I remember Linda serving her Lord at Ascension and loved being with the kids and teaching them. You all are in my thoughts and prayers.
