Leola A. Hoover
Our loving family member and friend passed away at Aberdeen Village PATH in Olathe, Kansas on March 28, 2015. Leola was born March 17, 1925 in Hanover, Kansas to George and Anna Turk.
Leola graduated from Hanover High School. She married Joseph Hoover on November 14, 1944. She was a tireless worker, with a great sense of humor and an unfaltering faith. It was Leola’s greatest joy when her house was filled with her family and friends.
An outstanding cook and a humble woman with a gentle spirit, Leola gave so many wonderful foodie memories to those that crossed her path. Who can forget her apple sauce cake, raisin bars, chocolate banana homemade ice cream, fried chicken, home grown sweet corn, peas and young potatoes, monster cookies or peanut butter balls, etc.
Leola encouraged and supported her family to have consistent, generous, compassionate, significant and spiritual lives. Leola consoled her family’s disappointments and celebrated her family’s academic, work, community, sport and activity accomplishments. We celebrated Leola’s many accomplishments including her masters track and field shot put victories in her eighties.
Leola was primarily a stay-at-home-mom to ten children until 1974 when she began a dairy farm operation from scratch near Clay Center, Kansas. The farm girl was back on the farm and she relished the country living. Her small town city slicker kids required two basketball goals to be placed on the property to make it feel right. Leola arose in the wee hours of the morning seven days a week for 22 years to get an early start on each day.
After retiring from farming, Leola spent several years in Junction City, Kansas and then moved to Overland Park, Kansas in 2010 to live with her older daughter, Marie.
Survivors include children; Joseph (Donna) Hoover, Jr, Wichita; Marie Hernandez, Overland Park; James (Regina) Hoover, Las Vegas, NV; Stephen (Diane) Hoover, Shawnee,; Justin (Ann) Hoover, Junction City; Mark (Lori) Hoover, Indianapolis, IN; Kevin (Elaine) Hoover, Roeland Park; and Marcy (Dave) VanLandingham, Overland Park, brother; Clarence Turk, Hanover and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Joseph B. Hoover, Sr, sons, Patrick and Hugh Hoover, and brothers, George and Harold Turk.
A Mass of Christian burial will be at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Olathe, KS on Wednesday, April 1 at 10:30am. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Joseph B. and Leola A. Hoover Scholarship Fund at Kansas State University.
