Katrina Sue Bellem

Katrina Sue (Buehrer) Bellem passed away surrounded by her loving family on July 16, 2021.

Katrina was born on March 11, 1963 in Excelsior Springs, MO. She married Todd Bellem, the love of her life on June 11. Todd and Katrina met at a 5k race while attending Mizzou and the rest is history. They lived in Tolland, Connecticut for 5 years, then settled in Prairie Village, Kansas where they lived for the next 25 years. The two celebrated their 33rd anniversary this year.

Katrina was a dedicated Physical Therapist and spent the last 15 years working for the Hickman Mills School District where she was loved and admired by her amazing coworkers and students. Todd and Katrina had two daughters, Lexi and Savannah, whom she loved dearly. Katrina enjoyed many adventures with her family, especially in the beloved Winnebago camper. She took several trips in the last year of her life, including exploring Utah’s National Parks, Coeur d’Alene, Grand Teton, Phoenix, Ft. Lauderdale, Breckenridge, and Estes Park.

Running was a huge part of Katrina’s life, which helped her stay very active even while battling cancer for the past five years. She has gained many friends from running and competed in countless races, including the Boston Marathon. She had quite the competitive spirit and took home many first place titles over the years.

Katrina was preceded in death by her father Gary Buehrer. She is survived by her husband Todd Bellem, her daughters Lexi Bellem and Savannah McGillicuddy (Tommy), her mother Barbara Buehrer, and her sister Denise Buehrer.

Katrina would like to give special thanks to her family for being there all throughout her difficult times; Todd, Lexi, Savannah and Tommy, Barbara, Denise, her sister- and brother-in-law Kris and Dan Schenkelberg, her nieces Anna and Tessa Schenkelberg, and her father-in-law Norm Bellem. She would also like to thank her long-time friends from Excelsior Springs; Susan and Marty Berndt and Susan and Jeff Claycomb; plus her faithful Prairie Village running friends who stuck with her throughout her battle with cancer; Sara Aitken, Susan Campbell, Barbie O’Toole, Mary Luder, and Anne Edmonds.

I remember seeing you in St. Louis at a shopping mall and we both were going to see Wicked. We talked for an hour like 40 years hadn’t even past from our track days. So sorry you lost your battle, sure you are running in heaven and beating people like you did me in the 1/4 mile. Prayers to all your family.

  8. L.H. and Vickie Hale on July 20, 2021 at 11:59 am

Barbara, L.H. and I have known you most of our married life and watched your girls grow up. Our hearts go out to you and the family at this difficult time. Katrina befriended me on Facebook this past year or so to share our travels with each other. I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed that. Her spirit throughout her struggle is something to be in awe of, and she set a fine example for all of us to follow.
    Love to all,
    L.H. and Vickie
