Joyce Padgett Lea
Joyce Padgett Lea, 88, died peacefully January 27, 2011, from complications of pneumonia. All her daughters were with her. Joyce was born June 29, 1922, in St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of Earl C. Padgett, M.D. and Winona A. (Youmans) Padgett Gilkey. She attended Border Star Grade School, Southwest High School and graduated from Smith College with a degree in government, an interest she pursued for the rest of her life. She married Albert R. Lea at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church (NYC) in 1943. Joyce was a member of the Junior League of Kansas City and devoted many happy hours as a docent to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. She is survived by her four daughters: Patricia Padgett Lea of Port Ludlow, Washington; Jennifer Winona Lea of Chicago, Illinois; Anne Wentworth (Lea) Smith of Sawyer Michigan; and Melissa Padgett (Lea) Cunniff of Deerfield, Illinois. She is also survived by her sister, Patricia (Padgett) Pugh of Rye, New York, and her brother, Earl Calvin Padgett, Jr., of Kansas City, Missouri, as well as many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Private memorial services will be held at a later date.
