Joseph ‘Bernard’ Loftus, 91 of Overland Park, KS took his final breath the morning of August 25, 2022, after a short stay in Olathe Hospice House. Bernard was born February 4, 1931, to John ‘Jack’ and Philomena (Schalk) Loftus, a farming family in Richmond, KS.   As a young man, Bernard proudly served as a U.S. Army SFC in the foxholes of the Korean War and was a lifelong member of American Legion Post #370. Bernard spent much of his life serving others as a volunteer firefighter, auto mechanic, and reliable friend in need. Bernard retired after 35 years as a beloved custodian with the Shawnee Mission School District. 

Bernard was preceded in death by his wife and mother of his children Shirley J. (O’Connor) Loftus, a sister Katherine (Loftus) Miller, and half-siblings John, Jim, Pete, Al, and Mary Rose Gillihan. Bernard is survived by his wife Sherry (Smith) Loftus, son John Loftus, daughter Carol (Layman) Miller, and stepdaughter Tamara (James) Finlen. Bernard’s legacy continues to live through the lives of his grandchildren Mindy (Luke) Neeley, Derek (Shannon), Eric (Brooke), Brent (Mindi), Mitchell, Jordan (Jayme), Nolan Loftus, Jason (Aimee) Custer, Scott Custer, Ryan (Valerie) Custer, and James Finlen. Great-grandchildren include Hudson, Beau, Madison, Blake, Bailey, Ella, Noah, Courtney (Chase), Emily, Lily, Allison, Charlotte, and Junior.


A celebration of life will take place on Sunday, September 25, 2022, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the American Legion, 7500 W. 75th St., Overland Park, KS.

Memorial Contributions

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Olathe Hospice House, 15310 S. Marion St., Olathe, KS 66061. 66061.
