Jonathan G. Ethington

Jonathan G. Ethington, 31, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away July 15, 2013. Jon was born February 23, 1982 in Abilene, Texas. He grew up in Portland, Oregon and Glendale, Arizona. and graduated from Ironwood High School in Glendale in 2000. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 2000-2004. He deployed to Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Krygistan while he also took college courses. Jon obtained his bachelors degree two days before his departure from the Air Force. He always commented “knowledge is power, and knowledge is one thing that can never be taken from you.” Jon received the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Operation Southern Watch), Air Force Longevity Service Award, National Defense Service Medal, and Humanitarian Service Medal. He was stationed at Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, Texas.

Following his military service, Jon was employed by the Arizona Forestry Department and Farmers Insurance Co. and later worked in the payroll department for the General Service Administration. Jon was loved by many and will missed by all. Many of his military friends commented that he was a friend for life and one you could always depend on.

Jon was preceded in death by his father, Gary Ethington of Phoenix, AZ. He is survived by his mother Charlesea Nelson, his dad Loren Nelson and his brother, Jeffrey Ethington, all of Overland Park.  He is also survived by his sister Courtney Nelson, brothers Shane and Aaron Nelson, all of Surprise, Arizona and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Jon was an avid reader, loved sports, politics, and was a member of the Young Democrats of America. His character and loving heart is displayed in his final wishes- to have his memorial service include his father and to bury his father by his side.

Memorial service for Jon will be Monday July 22nd at 11 a.m. at the Amos Funeral Home in Shawnee, KS followed by burial at Johnson County Funeral Chapel and Memorial Gardens.

    So sorry for your loss girl .. I didn’t know Jon but if he was anything at all like his Mom he was a sweet person .. My heart goes out to you and your family ..
