Jerry Kernan, 72, of Olathe, Kansas passed away of natural causes on November 14th, 2019 at Olathe Medical Center.
He is survived by his wife, Mashell Welder; brothers, Jim Kernan (Yvonne) of Arkansas, Paul Kernan (Frances) of Florida, and sister Laurie Kernan-Carey (Russ) of Colorado along with many other family members.
Jerry served as an Army Medic during the Vietnam war. He was pretty quiet about his service but he saved lives. He never asked or sought out recognition for his service to our country, but he was a purple heart recipient. He loved his country and those who have served or are serving in the military.
Those acquainted with Jerry also knew his love for animals which led to him taking in many strays during his lifetime. His kind and generous heart was sometimes hidden by his quiet or gruff nature, but he was truly compassionate.
His wish was not to be recognized with a formal service. Abiding by his wishes, he will be remembered, in private, at a later date. He will be going home to Iowa.
In memory of Jerry, thank a military person for their service to our country. The appreciation shown helps heal the unseen wounds and sacrifices they’ve made for our freedoms. Because of Jerry’s love of animals, please consider adopting a stray or giving your time or resources to an animal shelter.
jerry was my replacement medic in pleiku vietnam, i got to know him before i left and after we both got back we were stationed at ft. lewis wa. and became lifelong friends. i had not heard from him in a while and looked him up on the internet just now and found his obituary. we had many adventures together and i tried to help him with his post war issues, smooth sailing bro.
Our thoughts and prayers are with your family. In deepest sympathy.
