Jean Ann Newcom

Jean Ann Newcom, 84, died peacefully May 4, 2012. The last days and hours of Jean’s life were spent in the loving company of her friends, hospice skilled caregivers and her beloved husband and two sons.

Jean was born March 25, 1928 in Des Moines, Iowa to Rollin and Mildred White. She spent her youth living in Lamoni, Iowa where she would eventually meet her high school sweetheart, future husband and life partner of 62 years, Byron Newcom.

Jean graduated from Drake University with a degree in art education. After marriage, Jean and Byron moved to Kansas City where she worked as a librarian, administrative assistant for the education department at UMKC, Shawnee Mission North High School and then for the head of Neurology at K.U. Med Center. Jean also worked with her husband in his graphic design business as editor, copywriter and proofreader.

Jean was a member of Delta Gamma sorority at Drake University and was a devoted member of the Community of Christ Church. She was passionate about learning, reading, gardening and designing interior and exteriors of the homes where her family lived. But Jean’s greatest passion and priority was inspiring and caring for her husband and two sons.

Jean will be remembered for her beautiful smile that was always present, for her strength and grace in dealing with life’s challenges and for her compassion, love and sweetness while interacting with all of God’s creatures.

Jean is survived by her loving husband and devoted caregiver, Byron Newcom; son Kirk Newcom of Gardner, Kansas and son, Andy Newcom of Fairway, Kansas. She also leaves behind a brother; Jim White and his wife Marge.

There will be a celebration of Jean’s life at 11:00 am, Monday, May 14 at Mission Road Community of Christ Church, 79th and Mission Road, Prairie Village, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care or the Alzheimer’s Association, 3846 W. 75th St., Prairie Village, KS 66208.
