Janet DeAnn Richards

Janet DeAnn Richards, Merriam, KS passed away on Jan. 28, 2020.  She was born to Rev. Dee Max and Ellen (Douglas) Fruits on May 13, 1940, in Crawfordsville, IN.

Janet drove stick shift cars at the age of 13 to help the family with transportation needs. Her love of cars lasted a lifetime and at 79 years young she still loved to “burn some rubber”. She was an accomplished pianist and played in her church for many years alongside her mother who played the organ. She enjoyed Harley rides with her husband and had a passion for jewelry that was easy to recognize. She could wear eight rings as easily as one and often did. She loved watching the Royals, Chiefs and her grandchildren’s college teams (Auburn, Georgia, Kansas State and Kansas). She had a contagious laugh and welcoming friendly style. Her caring personality for others whether friends or strangers was a prominent gift she always shared. Janet will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Janet was preceded in death by her loving husband of 55 years, Edward “Bud” Richards. Janet is survived by her two sons, Brian (Jackie) Richards of Cumming, GA and Jeff (Renea) Richards of Olathe, KS; two sisters, Ruth Douglas (Perry Marquis) of Merriam, KS and Merusha (Terry) Coker of Taos, NM; brother David (Laura) Fruits of Kansas City, KS; four grandchildren, Nicholas, Amanda, Jessica, and Jordan; many nieces and nephews and her loving dog Cali.

A private graveside service will be held on Feb. 24 at 10:30 a.m. at Chapel Hill-Butler in KCK. The family is very grateful to the many friends who comforted Janet this past year.

Memorial Contributions

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Prairie Paws Animal Shelter, Ottawa, KS.
