James V. Johnson

Johnson, James First Choice

Jim Johnson, 64, of Prairie Village, Kansas, passed away peacefully June 14, 2015.

Jim was born June 5, 1951 in Aberdeen, SD, son of James and Margaret Anderson Johnson. Jim graduated from Oak Park High School in North Kansas City in 1969 where he excelled as a cross country runner, setting state records in the mile and half-mile races. In 1976 he joined the US Navy, served on the U.S.S. Forrestal in the Mediterranean Sea, and was honorably discharged in 1980. Jim studied Political Science, graduated from Western Illinois University with a Masters degree and pursued a Ph.D. at KU. He met his wife, Peggy Johnson in Fairbanks, AK where they were married July 17, 1982.

Jim had an analytical mind and was well read on a variety of subjects, from history to science fiction. But he drew the line at romance novels.

He will be remembered for his compassion and fairness towards everyone, always willing to help friends and strangers alike.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy; sons Dane of Taipei, Taiwan and Drew of Dallas, TX; sisters Karen (Jerry) Honn of Leawood, KS, Pamela (Daniel) Strausbaugh of Belton, MO and Janet Johnson of Kansas City, MO; and many other loving relatives.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 20, 2015 at 1:00pm at Asbury United Methodist Church followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to City Union Mission at www.cityunionmission.org/donate/.

I want to express my deepest sorrow in your loss, I know Jim is in a better place now. I want to ackowledge that I could of been a better friend. I still consider JJ one of my best friends, my life was greatly enriched because of all the time and experiences we had together. Some of my fondest memories with life were with Jim, as a child and as a young adult, Jim helped to make me the person I am today. The whole Airey family will miss a great person and friend.
