Fred Emerson Brown

Fred E. Brown, 80, of Olathe, Kansas, passed away August 5, 2011, at Lakeview skilled nursing, under the care of Crossroads Hospice.   Fred was born September 20, 1930 in McDermott, Ohio, son of Oscar and Grace Brown.  He married Barbara Cochenour on January 27, 1951, in Greenup, KY.
Fred retired in 1993 in Bayville, New York, after working as a chemist for several companies over a period of 40 years.  Following his official retirement in New York, he relocated to Olathe, to be closer to his family, and he worked as a part-time health and safety instructor for the American Red Cross Greater Kansas City Chapter for over 10 years, teaching CPR, first aid, and related preparedness courses. He also performed consulting work in the field of business quality and process control.
He was active throughout his life in health and safety, including volunteering as an ambulance first responder in New York.   Fred was a member of several organizations in the fields of science and business including the International Planetarium Society, the American Society for Quality, Toastmasters, and he was also a member of the Lions Club.  He loved boating, particularly sailing, as well as other outdoor and nature activities such as hiking and camping.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara R. Brown, of Olathe, Kansas, his daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Michael Press, Paola, Kansas, son and daughter-in-law Gary Brown and Stephanie Cosby, North Beach, Maryland and his twin brother David L. and Lillian Brown, Warner Robins, Georgia.
A memorial service will be held at 10 AM Thursday, August 11th, 2011 at Grace United Methodist Church, 11485 Ridgeview Rd, Olathe, Kansas, 913-859-0111.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either the American Red Cross Greater Kansas City Chapter (211 West Armour Blvd., Kansas City, MO 64111-2094, 816-931-8400) or the South Carolina Maritime foundation (P.O. Box 22405 Charleston, SC 29413, 843-722-1030).
