Elmer O. Holtan
On Thursday, November 13, 2014, Elmer O. Holtan, 89, passed away at Centerpointe Care Center of Lakeview Village in Lenexa, Kansas. Visitation will be at 10:00 AM, followed by Memorial Services at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 22, 2014 at Overland Park Lutheran Church, 7810 West 79th Street, Overland Park, Kansas 66210. Burial will be later in Iowa.
Elmer was born in Washburn, North Dakota on January 22, 1925 to Mildred (Nelson) and Hubert Holtan, Sr. Growing up on the family farm, he learned to love horses, winning a Championship trophy at a 4-H rodeo. Serving as the 4-H State President of North Dakota, Elmer served as an ambassador to New Zealand in the International Farm Youth Exchange Program, resulting in a trip around the world.
His next step was to graduate from North Dakota State University, followed by course work at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa where he met Helen Hanson. On June 9, 1962, they were married in Belmond, Iowa. Two years later Elmer accepted a job as a Disability Examiner with Social Security in Kansas City, Missouri where he worked until retirement.
Elmer’s life long hobby was walking-outdoors, malls, and halls of Lakeview Village-along with working on cars.
He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Mildred and Hubert Holtan, Sr.; sister Katherine Wilson; brother Hubert Holtan, Jr; and niece Korliss Hodges. Surviving him is his loving wife, Helen, of 52 years, plus many nieces and nephews.
