Doris Mae Bender

Doris Mae Bender

May 17, 1929 to February 28, 2020

Doris was born in Toledo, Ohio on May 17, 1929.  She was an identical twin to her sister Donna.  Donna passed away when she was 8 years old from scarlet fever.  Her parents were Henry and Emma Peters.  They lived in Oak Harbor, Ohio where her father worked for the city and her mother baked pies for the local diner.

Doris went to Oak Harbor High School.  She was in the school band where she played Clarinet and Piccolo.  She was very involved in school plays and glee club. She attended St. John’s Lutheran church where she sang in the choir.

In 1950, she met Robert L. Bender on a blind date.  They fell in love and were married on May 26, 1951.  At that time, she worked at the local newspaper as secretary to the editor.  In August 1953, she gave birth to their son, Robert. In 1959, the family moved to Loveland, CO where her husband was the general manager of an ore processing plant and she worked as the church secretary at Zion Lutheran church. In 1966, the family moved to Northern Virginia.  Doris worked as an Executive Assistant to top executives in direct mail and personal investigations. Then in 1980, they moved to Houston, TX for work there.   She was a hostess for model homes in the Houston area.  When her husband Bob died from leukemia in 2009 Doris moved to Lenexa, KS to live at Greenwood Terrace.

Doris loved her 3 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.  Nothing brightened her day more than to see them.  She always had some kind of little gift to give them when they would come to visit her.  She also loved living at Greenwood Terrace. She had many friends at Greenwood, several who passed on before her.

Doris was a Christian.  She believed in Jesus Christ as her savior.  She read her Bible every day, even when it was possible for her while in the hospital.

Doris is preceded in death by her parents, sister and husband.  Her surviving family consists of her son Robert P. Bender, daughter-in-law, Debra K. Bender, grandson Ryan (spouse Lydia Bender), granddaughters Erin (spouse Brent Rounds) and Sara, and great-grandchildren Parker, William, Elijah, Madelyn, Lillian, Wyatt and Charles.
