Don joined the United States Navy in 1951 at the age of 20 and honorably served four years during the Korean War where he served aboard the USS Trathen (DD530) destroyer as a Machinist Mate 1. Throughout his years working, Don held many positions in many fields; ranging from microbiologist to chemist, from lawn care specialist to pickle picker, Don’s list of jobs and the associated stories that went with them were a constant delight to those around him. Finally retiring at the age of 62 from the City of Olathe as a Chemist Supervisor, Don was rewarded with 24 years of leisure which he spent with Joan traveling the country.

Don is survived by his loving wife – Joan, sister – Bonnie Tompkins, son – Carl and three grandchildren – Noah, Elijah, and Samuel.  He is preceded in death by his daughter, Lori Ann and two brothers, Richard and Jerry.  Throughout his life, Don was an avid duck hunter, wood carver, enjoyed books about cowboys and playing solitaire on his laptop.  He most enjoyed purchasing used lawnmowers to tune them up then give them away.

Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, the family will be holding a private service but would like to hold a remembrance for Don’s many friends once the pandemic has lifted. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to suggest donating to Olathe Health Hospice who were so helpful during Don’s battle with kidney disease, or Ducks Unlimited which Don was a long-time member and avid supporter of.
