Karen Sue Meder (Pettigrew)

Karen Sue Meder (Pettigrew) passed away August 7, 2013 after a 9 month battle with cancer.

Karen was born July 18, 1958 to Curtis and Marion Pettigrew of St. Joseph, Missouri.  Karen was a free, wandering spirit who loved to travel, capturing the wonders of her life through her passion for photography. Karen enjoyed spending time with her ten grandchildren, which is documented by her countless photo albums.

Karen is survived by her parents, Curtis and Marion Pettigrew of St. Joseph, MO; her husband, Jim Meder, of Gallatin, MO; one son, Shawn Pettigrew and his wife Mandy of Kidder, MO, and their five children, Austin Pettigrew, Beth Johnson, LaKota Johnson, Shelby Pettigrew, and Kaylee Pettigrew; two step-sons, James Meder II and his wife Cynde of Troy, MO and their three children, Alex, Alyssa, and James Thomas; Ryan Meder and his wife Michelle of Overland, Mo. and their two children, Kaiden and Keagan ; two brothers, Gregory Pettigrew and his wife Susan of St. Joseph, MO; Thomas Pettigrew and his wife Beate of Shawnee, KS., and two nieces, Alexandria Ballenger and Cassie Ross.

Karen spent 16 years in the trucking industry and the last 7 years employed as a cook on commercial river vessels, ending her career at American Commercial Lines. Over the years, Karen captured the hearts of many, and many were honored to call her a friend. She, too, was honored to call you a friend as well.

At Karen’s request, there will be no services or visitation, but instead there will be a celebration of her life at a later date to be announced.

Karen left a part of herself, with every person she knew and every place she visited, because she was never too busy to offer help, a kind word or encouragement, and always wore that vivacious smile. Her talents were many, yet she was always eager to try her hand at something new. She brought out the best in other people because she was the best! She will be sadly missed, but all of us who knew her know Heaven is aglow with her presence. Our heartfelt sympathy to Jim and all Karen’s family and friends.
